Reviewing DIY Auto Glass Repair

West Texas Windshields is proud to provide auto glass repair to San Angelo residents, as well as most of Western Texas, in the form of our mobile windshield repair. Often times we hear the same thing from vehicle owners: “I planned on doing it myself, but didn’t have the time,” to which we emphatically respond with saying that we are glad they didn’t attempt to do so.

The Unfortunate Reality of DIY Auto Glass Repair

Time and Effort

One major difference between a professional repair from West Texas Windshields and a DIY auto glass repair kit is the time and effort required to fill the crack. Even if we assume for a moment that the DIY kit works to its full potential and repairs the crack or chip to the same level as a professional auto window repair, the time and effort a vehicle’s owner will have to invest hardly makes the potential cost savings worthwhile.

For instance, an average DIY auto glass repair can easily take 1-2+ hours, whereas our skilled team of mobile windshield repair experts can complete the job in about 15 minutes. Best of all, we come to you at home, work, school, or wherever; this frees up your time to be spent focusing on things that matter.

As far as effort goes, we know exactly what to look for in your auto glass crack or chip to ensure that no glass particles remain within the blemish and have advanced technology available to ensure the surface is free of moisture, quickly and reliably seals, and does so without significant risk for further cracking. The average vehicle owner doesn’t have the experienced eye and tools that our mobile windshield repair experts do, which creates a far more difficult task.

Subpar Equipment

Additionally, DIY kits use disposable versions of industry-specific tools used by professionals; these imitations are not only cumbersome, but also unwieldy and unreliable. Plus, DIY kits aren’t specifically made for different types of windshield cracks (star breaks, bullseyes, cracks, etc.) which makes it difficult for the vehicle owner to know if the kit will work before giving it a try.

Finishing Touches

Finally, professional auto glass repair experts are experienced in ensuring that the chip repair will do more than just fill the crack, but also act as the windshield should. Essentially, by understanding how to finish the job appropriately, we make sure that the resin is flush with surrounding glass and as discreet as possible. These two finishing touches limit the blemish to simply the resin used to fill the interior of the crack, greatly diminishing the appearance of the fill compared to less efficient DIY kits. Perhaps most importantly, because the resin is flush to the windshield, the resin will not leave a bowl-like surface for water to collect or freeze in and your wiper blades will not get caught upon excess resin that exceeds the depth of the chip (a common occurrence in DIY repairs).

Don’t regret the time and effort spent on a DIY job, call West Texas Windshields today!
